Problem

(Long Answer Question) A spherical mirror is being discussed in a classroom session on image formation. Answer the following in brief, using standard textbook terminology wherever required. (i) Define the focal length ff of a spherical mirror in terms of its radius of curvature RR. (ii) State the Cartesian sign convention for measuring (a) object distance uu, (b) image distance vv and (c) focal length ff for concave and convex mirrors. (iii) A spherical mirror has radius of curvature 40 cm40\,\text{cm}. Using the convention stated in part (ii), write the sign and numerical value of its focal length when the mirror is (a) concave, (b) convex.
