Problem

A monochromatic beam of light with frequency 5.0×1014 Hz5.0\times10^{14}\,\text{Hz} travels through air, where its speed is 3.0×108 m/s3.0\times10^{8}\,\text{m/s}. The beam then enters a solid crown-glass block in which its speed is 2.0×108 m/s2.0\times10^{8}\,\text{m/s}. Ignore any dispersion within the glass. (a) Describe qualitatively how the speed, frequency, and wavelength of the light compare in air and in glass. (b) Calculate the wavelength of the light in air and the wavelength in glass. Express each answer in nanometres. (c) Explain why an observer perceives the same color for the light in both media even though its wavelength is different.
