Problem

A ray of monochromatic light of wavelength 600 nm600\,\text{nm} in air travels normally through three transparent slabs placed one after another: water (n=1.33)(n=1.33) of thickness 2 cm2\,\text{cm}, crown glass (n=1.50)(n=1.50) of thickness 1 cm1\,\text{cm} and diamond (n=2.42)(n=2.42) of thickness 0.5 cm0.5\,\text{cm}. (i) Calculate the time taken by the light to emerge from the far face of the diamond slab. (ii) Determine the wavelength of light in each slab. (iii) Calculate the number of complete wavelengths that fit in each slab and hence obtain the total number of wavelengths contained in the entire path inside the three slabs.
