Problem

A transverse wave travelling on a stretched string is represented by y(x,t)=0.04cos⁡(4πx−200πt+π3)y(x,t)=0.04\cos(4\pi x-200\pi t+\tfrac{\pi}{3}), \text{where } xx and yy are in metres and tt in seconds. Answer the following questions. (a) Part 1: (i) Identify the numerical values (with proper units) of amplitude, angular wave number, angular frequency and initial phase constant. (b) Part 2: (ii) Calculate the wavelength, time–period, frequency and speed of the wave. (c) Part 3: (iii) State clearly whether the wave propagates along the +x–direction or the −x–direction and give a brief reason for your answer.
