Problem

Monochromatic light of wavelength λ\lambda falls on two narrow slits separated by distance dd, and the interference pattern is observed on a screen at distance DD (with D≫dD \gg d). (i) Starting from the geometry of the experimental arrangement, derive an expression that relates the phase difference ϕ\phi at a point located a distance yy from the central maximum on the screen to the quantities yy, dd, DD and λ\lambda. (ii) Hence obtain a general expression for the separation Δy\Delta y between two adjacent points on the screen where the phase difference differs by 2π2\pi. (iii) Evaluate Δy\Delta y numerically for λ=600 nm\lambda = 600\,\text{nm}, d=0.40 mmd = 0.40\,\text{mm} and D=1.2 mD = 1.2\,\text{m}, and comment on what physical quantity Δy\Delta y represents in an interference pattern.
