Problem

Consider the following statements concerning nuclear forces and nuclear stability. For each statement, write whether it is True or False and then justify your answer with suitable physical reasoning. (i) If the nuclear force had a long range comparable to electromagnetic interactions, the deuteron would be more tightly bound than it is at present. (ii) Mirror nuclei (same mass number AA, but with protons and neutrons interchanged) possess nearly equal binding energies because the nuclear force is charge-independent. (iii) The existence of a repulsive core at very small separations prevents all nucleons in a nucleus from collapsing into a point. (iv) Were the attractive part of the nuclear force to increase with distance, nuclei heavier than iron (A≈56A\approx56) would become progressively more stable than lighter ones.
