Problem

A student wants to measure the speed of a transverse wave travelling along a stretched string by using only two experimental records: (1) a single photograph showing the shape of the string at one instant, and (2) a displacement–time graph obtained at one fixed point on the string. Explain in detail the procedure the student should follow. (i) Describe how the wavelength can be obtained from the photograph without using any time information. (ii) Explain how the period of oscillation can be determined from the displacement–time graph. (iii) Show, step by step, how the wavelength from (i) and the period from (ii) can be combined to obtain the speed of the wave.
