A sound wave of frequency 440 Hz440\,\text{Hz} and amplitude 1.5 mm1.5\,\text{mm} travels through air with a speed of 330 m s−1330\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}. Consider a particular layer of air located 0.50 m0.50\,\text{m} from the source at t=0t=0. (i) Calculate the maximum displacement of the air molecules in this layer from their equilibrium position. (ii) Determine the distance that the sound disturbance covers in 0.02 s0.02\,\text{s}. (iii) How many complete oscillations does the chosen layer of air execute in the time interval given in part (ii)? (iv) Find the net displacement of the air molecules in the layer after these oscillations are completed. (v) Explain briefly why your answers to parts (ii) and (iv) are fundamentally different.
