Problem

The point R(−725, 2425)R\bigl(-\tfrac{7}{25},\,\tfrac{24}{25}\bigr) on the unit circle corresponds to the angle 2θ2\theta, where 90∘<2θ<180∘90^{\circ}<2\theta<180^{\circ}. (i) Write down the values of sin⁡2θ\sin2\theta, cos⁡2θ\cos2\theta and tan⁡2θ\tan2\theta. (ii) Using suitable trigonometric identities, form simultaneous equations in sin⁡θ\sin\theta and cos⁡θ\cos\theta and solve them to obtain their exact values. (iii) State the quadrant in which θ\theta lies, giving reasons based on your answers in part (ii). (iv) Calculate tan⁡θ\tan\theta and verify that 1+tan⁡2θ=sec⁡2θ1+\tan^{2}\theta=\sec^{2}\theta for this angle.
