Problem

The speeds of light in four transparent liquids L₁, L₂, L₃ and L₄ are 2.20×108 m s−12.20\times10^{8}\,\text{m s}^{-1}, 2.40×108 m s−12.40\times10^{8}\,\text{m s}^{-1}, 1.95×108 m s−11.95\times10^{8}\,\text{m s}^{-1} and 2.00×108 m s−12.00\times10^{8}\,\text{m s}^{-1} respectively. (a) Arrange these liquids in the order of increasing refractive index. (b) Calculate the absolute refractive index of each liquid (take speed of light in vacuum c=3.00×108 m s−1c=3.00\times10^{8}\,\text{m s}^{-1}). (c) Which of the four liquids will have the smallest critical angle when it is in contact with air? Justify your choice using your answers from part (b).
