Problem

A travelling wave on a stretched string is described by y(x,t)=0.05sin⁡(2πx+100πt)y(x,t)=0.05\sin(2\pi x+100\pi t) with SI units throughout. (i) Explain, with reference to the given equation, how the sign of the term containing tt indicates the direction of wave propagation. (ii) Using the numerical coefficients in the equation, calculate the speed of the wave. (iii) Keeping the phase of the wave constant, derive the equation relating xx and tt and interpret the physical meaning of its slope on an xx–tt graph.
