The electromagnetic spectrum covers an enormous range of frequencies and wavelengths that find use in daily life as well as specialised technology.
(i) Draw a neat, labelled diagram of the electromagnetic spectrum showing the correct sequence of the following regions in order of increasing frequency: radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays and gamma rays.
(ii) Microwaves of frequency about 2.45GHz are employed in domestic ovens. Explain briefly why this particular band is suitable for heating food.
(iii) Ultraviolet radiation is routinely used for sterilising surgical instruments, whereas visible light is not. State any two reasons for this choice, relating them to the position of ultraviolet in the spectrum.
