Problem

A mechanical wave on a long spring is described by the equation y(x,t)=−0.05sin⁡(5x+60πt),y(x,t)=-0.05\sin(5x+60\pi t), where xx and yy are in metres and tt in seconds. Respond to the following queries. (i) Rewrite the wave equation so that the amplitude appears as a positive quantity and identify the numerical value of the amplitude. (ii) Find the wavelength, period, frequency and speed of the wave. (iii) Specify the direction in which the wave is propagating and justify your answer with reference to the form of the equation.
