Problem

During an earthquake, a seismic station located 6.0×105 m6.0 \times 10^{5}\,\text{m} from the epicenter detects two distinct sets of waves. • The first set arrives 100 s100\,\text{s} after the quake begins. • The second set arrives 180 s180\,\text{s} after the quake begins. Answer the following. (a) Calculate the speed of the first set of waves. (b) Calculate the speed of the second set of waves. (c) For each set, state whether the particle displacements in the ground are parallel to the direction of wave propagation or perpendicular to it. (d) Classify each set of waves as transverse or longitudinal and justify your choice using both the speeds you calculated and the particle-motion directions from part (c).
