Problem

A single narrow slit of width 0.050 mm is illuminated by a green laser whose wavelength in air is 550 nm. The diffraction pattern is projected onto a screen located 2.00 m from the slit. The screen is 25 cm wide and is centered on the original (undeflected) ray. Answer the questions that follow. (a) Determine the distance, measured perpendicularly along the screen, from the central maximum to the first diffraction minimum. (b) Using your result from part (a), decide whether the entire central bright maximum is completely contained within the physical bounds of the screen. Fully justify your conclusion.
