In a Young’s double–slit experiment, the two slits are 0.25 mm apart and the screen is placed 1.5 m from the slits. The light used has wavelength 550 nm.
(a) Calculate the fringe width on the screen.
(b) The experimenter wishes to reduce the fringe width to one-third of its original value while keeping the wavelength and screen distance unchanged. Determine the new slit separation required.
(c) Explain briefly why the position of the central maximum remains unchanged after altering the slit separation.
