Problem
Three transparent liquids P, Q and R have mass densities 0.8 g cm⁻³, 1.0 g cm⁻³ and 1.2 g cm⁻³ respectively, but their refractive indices are 1.50, 1.33 and 1.25 in the same order.
Answer the following questions related to these liquids.
(i) Define optical density of a medium.
(ii) Arrange the liquids in ascending order of optical density and justify your answer.
(iii) Explain why the order of optical density obtained in part (ii) is different from the order of their mass densities given above.
(iv) A ray of light travels from liquid P into liquid Q. State whether the refracted ray bends towards or away from the normal and give a brief reason.
