Problem

Monochromatic light produces Fraunhofer diffraction at a single slit. (a) Derive the mathematical condition for the angular positions of diffraction minima for a slit of width aa illuminated by light of wavelength λ\lambda. (b) Light of wavelength 600 nm600\,\text{nm} is incident normally on a slit of width 0.30 mm0.30\,\text{mm}. Calculate the angular positions of the first and second diffraction minima. (c) If the screen is kept 2.0 m2.0\,\text{m} away from the slit, determine the linear distance on the screen between the first and the second diffraction minima on the same side of the central maximum.
