Problem

A science demonstration uses two different toys, each of length 10 m10\,\text{m}: a taut nylon rope stretched straight along the floor and a helical spring (slinky) kept on the same line. (i) A sharp sideways jerk is given to one end of the rope, producing a single pulse that travels to the other end at a speed of 25 m/s25\,\text{m/s}. Calculate the time taken by the pulse to reach the far end. (ii) Immediately afterwards one end of the slinky is pushed forward once so that a single compression travels along the spring at 5 m/s5\,\text{m/s}. Calculate the time taken for this compression to reach the other end. (iii) Identify for each case whether the wave produced is transverse or longitudinal and justify your answer with reference to the direction of particle vibration.
