Problem

A thin steel wire under tension supports a periodic transverse disturbance of wavelength 0.40 m0.40\,\text{m} at a frequency of 150 Hz150\,\text{Hz}. At the same instant, a loudspeaker kept near the wire emits sound of the same frequency in air, the wavelength of the sound being measured as 2.30 m2.30\,\text{m}. (a) Calculate the speed of the wave travelling along the steel wire. (b) Calculate the speed of sound in air from the given data. (c) Classify the wave on the wire and the wave in air as either transverse or longitudinal. (d) Which one of these two waves can be polarised? Give a reason for your answer.
