Problem

A two–digit number is such that the product of its digits is 12. When 36 is added to the number, the digits interchange their places. (i) Let the tens digit of the number be xx and the units digit be yy. Express the given conditions as two algebraic equations in xx and yy. (ii) Eliminate one variable to obtain a quadratic equation in the other variable. (iii) Solve the quadratic equation and hence determine the required two–digit number.
