Problem

A harmonic disturbance travelling through air is represented by the pressure variation p(x,t)=p0+150cos⁡(1400πt−14πx)  Pa,p(x,t)=p_0+150\cos(1400\pi t-14\pi x)\;\text{Pa}, where p0=1.01×105 Pap_0=1.01\times10^{5}\,\text{Pa} is the mean pressure. (i) Determine the frequency of the sound wave. (ii) Calculate its wavelength. (iii) Compute the speed of sound implied by the above equation. (iv) Using a suitable argument based on the phase term, decide whether the wave moves in the positive or negative xx–direction. (v) If a point at x=2.0 mx=2.0\,\text{m} registers a maximum pressure at t=0t=0, find the earliest subsequent time at which it again registers a maximum pressure.
