Problem

Two identical transverse waves travel simultaneously along the positive xx-direction on the same string: y1=0.03sin⁡(6x−120t)y_1=0.03\sin(6x-120t) y2=0.03sin⁡(6x−120t+π2)y_2=0.03\sin(6x-120t+\tfrac{\pi}{2}) Displacements yy are in metres, xx in metres and tt in seconds. (i) For the wave y1y_1, determine the wavelength, frequency, time–period and propagation speed. Also state its direction of travel. (ii) Obtain the phase difference between y1y_1 and y2y_2 at the point x=1 mx=1\,\text{m} and time t=0.20 st=0.20\,\text{s}. (iii) At t=0t=0, calculate the smallest separation along the xx-axis between two points that are in the same phase on the two waves.
