Problem

A boat leaves a jetty and travels successively along three straight-line paths: • 3.0 km3.0\,\text{km} due east, • 2.0 km2.0\,\text{km} in a direction 60∘60^{\circ} north of east, • 1.5 km1.5\,\text{km} due south. (i) Draw the three displacement vectors consecutively to scale on a sheet of graph paper. Measure and record the magnitude and compass direction of the boat’s overall displacement from the jetty. (ii) On the same sheet, first combine the first two displacement vectors into a single resultant, then add the third displacement to this resultant. Measure and record the final displacement obtained by this two-step construction. (iii) Compare the results of parts (i) and (ii). State any difference observed and briefly explain its likely cause in the context of graphical methods.
