Problem

An observer standing on the bank of a clear pond finds that a pebble at the bottom appears to be 2.4 m2.4\,\text{m} below the surface when viewed normally. The refractive index of water relative to air is 4/34/3. (i) Calculate the real depth of the pebble. (ii) Determine the normal shift produced in this observation. (iii) If the pond were filled with kerosene of refractive index 1.441.44 up to the same level, what would be the apparent depth of the pebble? Assume normal viewing in each case.
